A Day in Middelburg

What to Do in Zeeland’s Charming Capital

Before our temporary move to the Zeeland province of the Netherlands, I’d heard glowing things about Middelburg. When I finally spent a December day exploring its charming streets, it was easy to see why.

With its inviting blend of colorful shops, cozy cafés, peaceful canals, and striking historic architecture, the city strikes a lovely balance—vibrant yet tranquil. I especially appreciate places that feel walkable and well-sized: you can cover Middelburg from end to end in a day without feeling rushed, yet there’s still plenty to discover.

Since we now live just 30 minutes away, I’ve had the chance to return a few times. Below are some of my favorite finds and tips for spending a day in Middelburg, the Netherlands.

Where to stay in Middelburg

If I were looking for a place to stay in Middelburg, I'd consider Boutique Hotel The Roosevelt. It's a stylish boutique hotel located in the heart of the city, adjacent to the historic Abbey and the iconic Lange Jan tower.

Where to Go, Eat, and Shop in Middelburg

City hall (Stadhuis)

Markt square is a great place to begin your visit, anchored by Middelburg’s striking City Hall. With its ornate Gothic facade and soaring tower, the building is one of the most iconic landmarks in Zeeland. Built in the 15th century, it’s a beautiful example of late Gothic architecture and still stands as a centerpiece of the city’s historic core.

Even if you don’t go inside, it’s worth pausing here to admire the intricate stonework and the lively energy of the square which is filled with outdoor cafés and on Thursdays and Saturdays…

MIDDELBURG WEEKLY MARKET

Every Thursday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Saturday from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Middelburg's Markt square transforms into one of Zeeland's largest weekly markets, set against the backdrop of the historic City Hall. Visitors can explore a diverse array of stalls offering fresh produce, cheeses, fish, clothing, and various local specialties.

Christmas in Middelburg

During the Christmas season, Middelburg’s Market Square transforms into a festive hub, complete with an ice skating rink set up right in front of the historic City Hall. Twinkling lights, a decorated tree, and cozy food stalls make it a magical spot to soak up the holiday spirit.

Reigerstraat

One of Middelburg’s most photogenic streets, known for its seasonal displays—twinkling lights in winter and colorful umbrellas in summer. As you stroll beneath the decorations, you’ll catch a beautiful view of the towering Abbey in the distance. It’s a favorite for locals and visitors alike, perfect for a leisurely wander or that picture-perfect moment.

Middelburg Abbey

Middelburg’s Abbey complex is a historic heart of the city, dating back to the 1100s. Today, it houses the provincial government and the Zeeuws Museum, but it’s the towering Lange Jan (Long John) that really catches your eye—rising over 90 meters, it’s visible from all over town and offers sweeping views if you're up for the climb.

Where to Eat in Middelburg: Lunch & Coffee Picks

If you only have a day in Middelburg, grab lunch at De Herberg—it’s cozy, creative, and popular enough that it’s worth making a reservation (I learned that the hard way!).

Afterward, stop by Wooncafé for a coffee or chai. The vibe is warm and relaxed, with stylish, homey decor that makes it a perfect midday pause.

Shopping in Middelburg

Segeersstraat is a charming pedestrian street in the heart of Middelburg, known for its blend of historic architecture and contemporary shops. Lined with boutiques, galleries, and specialty stores, it's a delightful spot for a leisurely stroll and some shopping.

Just around the corner, Langeviele offers a mix of local boutiques, home goods stores, and well-known brands. It's one of the city's most popular shopping streets, perfect for browsing everything from fashion to antiques.

Here are a few standout shops from my visit:

  • Lievelings – This charming boutique offers a quirky, curated selection of gifts. Shopkeeper Emma was a delight, and the whole space feels thoughtfully personal—perfect for finding something unique.

  • Huis van Bloemen – A magical, whimsical shop filled with both real and beautifully crafted faux floral arrangements. Walking through it feels like stepping into an artful garden indoors.

  • The Drvkkery – More than just a bookshop, this local favorite also houses a café and regularly hosts cultural events. It’s a cozy spot to browse new reads, sip coffee, and soak up the creative atmosphere.

  • Dille & Kamille – A beloved Dutch chain known for its natural home goods and kitchenware. The Middelburg location, on Langeviele, is beautifully styled and a joy to browse.

Strolling through Middelburg

One of the best ways to experience Middelburg is to simply walk without a plan. The city is compact and wonderfully walkable, with quiet alleyways and cobblestone lanes that seem to invite you to slow down and explore. It’s the kind of place where “getting lost” is actually the point.

I already mentioned Reigerstraat—with its seasonal displays and lovely view of the Abbey—but here are a few other streets worth wandering:

  • Kuiperspoort – Tucked just off the harbor, this hidden gem is one of Middelburg’s most photographed streets. Think cobbled path, ivy-covered walls, and 17th-century warehouses.

  • Spanjaardstraat – Lined with historic buildings and a quiet charm, it’s a lovely street to follow if you’re looping back toward the center.

  • Bogardstraat – Peaceful and residential, but worth a walk for its sweet row houses and calm energy.

Canal-side Wandering

Middelburg’s canals offer a peaceful break from the city center, with historic buildings, moored boats, and the occasional houseboat adding to the charm. It’s the perfect place for a quiet stroll or a scenic pause during your day.

Festive Doors, Windows & Holiday Cheer

If you find yourself in Middelburg during the holidays, the festivities in Markt Square are a highlight, but what truly charmed me were the decorated doors and windows all around town. Wreaths, garlands, twinkling lights—each one added a cozy, personal touch that made the whole city feel like a holiday postcard. It’s a lovely time to wander and take in the seasonal details that make Middelburg especially magical.

Tot ziens!
